Brief: Existing dockside port with surrounding dockside industral properties. Area of former dock transport lines to be redeveloped with extensive new service yard of 7200m² to support expansion of quayside operations.
Engineering challenges: Large area of deep made ground adjacent the dock wall which over time has become softened due to water ingress and has left very poor ground conditions. Was necessary to determine a method of improving the ground bearing capacity through the use of combined geogrids, land drainage and controlled methods of placement in order to provide a crust of ground that can then take very heavy dockside transport and storage loading combined twith the restrictions of site levels and end user working tolerances. Provision of an extensive surface water drainage system to cater for climate change challenges on the site and manage flooding of the existing drainage system. During the works, the port and quayside remained operational with minimal disruptions.
