Stadium bird's eye shot

Supporting one of football’s most iconic grounds

For nearly 20 years, Dudleys have supported Leeds United Football Club with the ongoing maintenance, improvement and redevelopment of Elland Road Stadium. As one of the country’s most recognisable football grounds, the stadium requires continual upkeep to meet the demands of the grounds, broadcasting, safety standards and growing supporter expectations.

Our role has involved helping to maintain the existing stands and wider Elland Road estate, while also delivering structural and infrastructure upgrades across the stadium. From resolving drainage issues during heavy storms and reviewing ageing roof structures, through to accessibility upgrades and new supporter facilities, we have worked closely with the club to deliver practical improvements that keep Elland Road ready for every matchday.

Engineering improvements for a modern matchday experience

Over the years, Dudleys have supported a wide range of projects across Elland Road, helping Leeds United respond to changing league requirements and the increasing expectations placed on Premier League clubs.

This has included structural solutions for upgraded hospitality areas, retail spaces, food and beverage facilities, supporter circulation routes and new media installations. We have also delivered engineering input for new broadcast studios within the South West corner, creating high-quality spaces used by national television broadcasters on matchdays.

Alongside these enhancements, we have continued to support the stadium’s wider infrastructure, ensuring practical improvements can be delivered efficiently within an operational live venue.

“It’s not just steel and buildings - it’s about making sure everything people rely on is safe, every single matchday.”

Helping Elland Road prepare for the future

A major focus of recent works has been supporting preparations for the significant redevelopment of the West Stand. Ahead of this next phase, Dudleys were appointed to review proposals for temporary lighting installations required to maintain Premier League broadcast standards during construction.

Our team developed a more efficient and practical structural solution for new roof-mounted lighting masts, helping reduce complexity and cost while ensuring the stadium could continue operating safely and effectively.

We have also undertaken annual structural inspections across the North, South, East and West Stands, reviewing terraces, roofs, handrails, circulation areas and external structures. These inspections support the club’s ongoing maintenance planning and certification requirements, helping ensure the stadium remains safe for supporters, staff and visitors.

Working within a live sports venue requires careful planning, responsive engineering and a clear understanding of operational pressures. We are proud to continue supporting Leeds United as Elland Road evolves for the next generation.

Frequently asked questions

How long did the project take?

The stadium needs constant upkeep to keep pace with operational demands, broadcasting requirements, safety standards, and rising fan expectations. We have been working with Elland Road for nearly 20 years!

What were the main challenges?

Working with old buildings brings two big challenges: making roofs work for modern open spaces – often requiring new steel supports – and dealing with legacy materials like asbestos or RAAC, which must be carefully managed or removed without disrupting safety, cost, or timelines.

What safety standards were applied?

The stadium undergoes annual full inspections covering roofs, terraces, external areas, and public access routes, with findings reported to the The Football Association to secure its structural safety certificate. We adhere to the Green Guide, which is one of the sports ground design guides as well as British standards and Eurocodes.

Who is responsible when things go wrong?

Ultimately, responsibility sits with the client. We carry out inspections, identify risks, and provide clear recommendations, highlighting what needs repair, monitoring, or further investigation. However, we can’t check every single element in detail, so it’s up to the client to act on that guidance and ensure the necessary work is carried out.

How do you ensure the stadium is summer-ready?

We carry out a full stadium inspection each summer – checking roofs, terraces, external areas, and all public access routes – then provide a clear checklist of any maintenance or upgrades needed before the new season.

How does this project benefit the surrounding community?

Maintaining and improving the stadium ensures it remains a safe, high-quality venue that supports local jobs, attracts visitors, and enhances the overall matchday experience for fans and the team!
